How does a small child perceive the world around us? Is it round or pointed, yellow or blue? Or maybe it’s green and oblong or hollow, but at the same time soft? The world of cognition of a child (in its first years) is composed of a variety of geometric shapes and colors. Lithuanian choreographer Birutė Banevičiūtė and three dancers put these colored shapes together as a puzzle and miraculously these forms combine to create recognizable vegetables— carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers—and sometimes even unrecognizable shapes, strange mushrooms, fruits and flowers appear. During the performance traveling through the child's developmental stages, dancers behave as children, acting out each phase: for instance crawling and bouncing as one year old, walking, running and clapping as two years old and galloping, hiding and turning around as three years old. These children's movements are accompanied by specially created music understandable for children under three years old. It is the first show for children under three to be presented in China. Following its successful debut at SHCAT in 2015 and the successful performance in the following years, Puzzle returns for a fifth time in 2020.
